This is #3 in the Detective Josie Quinn series, which I have followed from #1. And I just have to tell you that each book is better than the last!
EXCERPT: She started the fire in the nursery. Her lips curved into a smile as amber flames licked the walls and spread throughout the room, consuming the perfectly matching furniture and the carpet from which she’d spent so many hours scrubbing invisible marks. The gossamer crib canopy she painstakingly arranged every day went up in a satisfying whoosh.
‘Don’t wake the babies. Don’t go in there until the children are up. Don’t. Don’t. Don’t.’
This’ll teach her.
ABOUT THIS BOOK: When two young boys discover human bones buried beneath a tree in a trailer park, Detective Josie Quinn races to join her team at the scene. She used to play in those woods as a child, happier outside and away from her abusive mother, Belinda Rose.
Josie’s past crashes into her present when a rare dental condition confirms the bones belong to a teenage foster-child who was murdered thirty years ago. A girl named Belinda Rose…
Josie hasn’t seen her mother in years but, with an undeniable connection between her mother and the dead girl, does she dare try to track her down?
Just as Josie gets closer to uncovering a secret that will shatter her world forever, another body is uncovered. It’s suddenly clear that someone very close to Josie will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried forever.
As she battles the demons from her past, can Josie stop this killer before another precious life is taken?
MY THOUGHTS: WOW! There are plenty of twists and turns in Her Mother’s Grave by Lisa Regan. The previous two books in this series have cleverly built up to this point and, although this could be read as a stand-alone, there is a lot of background information in the first two books that would be helpful in understanding the finer nuances.
Her Mother’s Grave switches between now and Josie’s childhood, and it is very well done. The switches all have a purpose and fit seamlessly into the current story.
I thought I knew where she was going with this plot, and I was partly right. Partly. There were plenty of surprises, things that left me shaking my head in awed amazement.
I don’t want to say anything more which might give anything away, but Her Mother’s Grave is well worth reading. This is action-filled, suspenseful, and I just loved it!
